Wisconsin woman accused of drunk driving with child in her lap

Many parents may see little harm in letting a child pretend to operate a vehicle while it is parked in a driveway. Regardless of whether that is a good idea, allowing him or her access to the steering wheel while out on the road is never advisable. A 41-year-old woman has recently been accused of drunk driving after allegedly placing her 12-year-old child in her lap and letting her steer while driving on an interstate in Wisconsin.

Law enforcement agents were called out to investigate reports of a vehicle that was allegedly drifting in and out of lanes on an interstate while traveling at speeds of around 70 mph. Police also assert that several witnesses saw the driver of the vehicle allow a child to sit in her lap and steer the vehicle. After locating the vehicle in question, authorities proceeded to initiate a traffic stop and claim to have caught a strong scent of alcohol upon speaking with the driver.

The child was in the back seat of the car at the time, and the woman denied accusations that she had allowed her daughter to drive the vehicle. However, she allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel, and police assert that a breath test indicated her blood alcohol content to be over the legal limit to drive. She was taken into custody soon thereafter on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Being arrested and accused of drunk driving can be a stressful and taxing process. Those who face charges of this nature may benefit from speaking with an experienced attorney as soon as the charges are filed for guidance on the best course of action with which to proceed. An attorney in Wisconsin can assist a client in forming a strong defense, and if a conviction is unavoidable, assist in pursuing the most favorable outcome possible during subsequent court proceedings.
