1 arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Wisconsin

While allegations of driving under the influence may most commonly be associated with the consumption of alcohol, this isn't always the case with similar charges. Substances such as prescription medications can also inhibit a person's ability to operate a motor vehicle, and if an accident occurs, it could leave him or her facing drunk driving charges. A 35-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after a recent traffic stop in Wisconsin.

Law enforcement agents claim the incident began when an officer allegedly witnessed a vehicle hit a utility pole on a recent Wednesday night. The officer asserts that the woman didn't stop after striking the pole, and a traffic stop was initiated soon thereafter. Upon pulling the car over and approaching the driver, the officer asserts the woman subsequently fell asleep behind the wheel of her vehicle.

Authorities also assert that a 4-year-old child was in the vehicle at the time, and the child was released into the custody of her parents soon thereafter. Although it remains unclear if field sobriety tests were conducted, the woman was placed under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving and possession of heroin. Although this would reportedly be her first offense if a conviction is obtained, a first offense for drunk driving with a minor in the vehicle still carries severe consequences.

Although authorities have advised that charges are yet to be filed, allegations of drunk driving alone can have a significant impact on a person's life. Those who stand accused of similar offenses may wish to protect their futures, but they may need guidance in the process. A defense attorney in Wisconsin can help a person gain a better understanding of his or her available legal options and provide assistance in pursuing the best outcome achievable during court proceedings.
