1 Accused of Drunk Driving After Allegedly Running Red Light

|

Being involved in a routine traffic stop can be an intimidating experience, perhaps more so should the incident lead to additional allegations. Failing to adhere to a traffic light can be dangerous, and may give authorities reason to suspect the presence of further wrongdoing. A 40-year-old man in Wisconsin has recently been accused of drunk driving after allegedly running through a red light and almost striking a police cruiser.

According to reports, the incident took place on a recent Friday as a police officer was waiting at a traffic light. The officer claims that he began to pull through the intersection when the light turned green, but was forced to stop and barely avoided a collision as a vehicle ran through a red light from another direction. The officer proceeded to initiate a traffic stop and asserts the driver admitted to running the red light.

While speaking with the driver, the officer also asserts that he was exhibiting signs of impairment, and that there were several open alcohol containers within the vehicle. A subsequent breath test allegedly indicated the man's blood alcohol content to be more than twice the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle. He was taken into custody soon thereafter, and is reportedly facing his seventh drunk driving offense.

A conviction for drunk driving carries serious penalties that only increase in severity with each successive offense. Those who face similar charges may find it advisable to prepare for what comes next by focusing on their defense with guidance from an attorney. An attorney can thoroughly examine the situation and advise a client in Wisconsin on the best course of action to take during court proceedings.
