Off-duty police officer faces drunk driving charges in Wisconsin

There are a variety of scenarios in which a person may drift into the wrong lane of traffic. Issues with fatigue or unfamiliarity with the area could produce similar results, as can the sudden onset of a medical emergency. Unfortunately, an off-duty police officer has recently been accused of drunk driving following a traffic stop involving similar circumstances in Wisconsin.

Law enforcement agents say the incident began on a recent Sunday night after officers claimed to have encountered a driver traveling in the wrong lane of traffic. They also assert that the vehicle was moving at a high rate of speed at the time, and after catching up to the vehicle, they proceeded to initiate a routine traffic stop. During the stop, they claim the driver appeared to be exhibiting signs of impairment.

The man was taken into custody shortly thereafter and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Following his arrest, he has been placed on administrative leave from his duties as an officer within a local sheriff's office. Although this would be his first offense if a conviction is obtained, even a first offense could have a disastrous impact on various areas of his life, including his ability to continue working within a similar profession.

Being accused of drunk driving can be a stressful and intimidating experience. Those who face similar charges may wish to avoid the potentially devastating consequences a conviction could bring, and they could choose to speak with an attorney for guidance in understanding their available options. An attorney can examine the charges and evidence against a client in Wisconsin and assist him or her in forming a strong defense for use during court proceedings.
